Sometimes it’s not how original an idea is, but how well that idea is implemented that really matters. Shakespeare frequently borrowed plots; Led Zeppelin took riffs from blues musicians and groups they toured with; and, a magical boy named Harry Potter first appeared in the movie Troll. BABEL: The King of the Blocks from StormBASIC takes the basic gameplay from the worst Mini I’ve reviewed, Pile Up! Bakery, and manages to make it a lot of fun by giving it more structure and a lot more polish. It’s a simple premise—just piling up objects, in this case differently shaped blocks of stone, and having to cope with the laws of physics on your stacked blocks. It’s not like, say, Tetris, where the blocks just fall with no mass or inertia. Beyond that, BABEL: The King of the Blocks varies the goal of your block piling depending on which of the four modes you play. It’s a bit confusing at first when you start the game up. The main menu consists of a scene with several building sites, and you move a cursor to each site to play that mode. The first mode is Great Pyramid. Here the goal is to have a little guy (Babel, for whom the game is named) drop blocks on a platform that tilts when out of balance. If you manage to place all the blocks without tipping the platform over, you complete the level. This is tricky because Babel is at the top of the screen and the platform is at the bottom. So it’s hard to judge exactly where you are dropping blocks. The blocks also bounce a little. It requires a lot of trial and error, but thankfully you can restart each level very quickly. The next mode, Temple, is what I found to be the most fun. Here the goal is to drop all the blocks you are given onto a platform, without any spilling over. This one is tricky because usually the platforms are small or angled, or have some complicating factor. And, you often have some weirdly shaped blocks. So, you need to figure out what sort of shape you want to build with them and then actually place the blocks correctly. One level threw me for a loop at first, because you also have to drop the blocks quickly for it to work right (you need two pieces to crash together to cover up a gap). Tower Mode really is Pile Up! Bakery with an Egyptian theme. In that game, the goal of piling objects was to simply reach a given height. You also didn’t have much control of placing them but were fed them rather rapidly by a conveyor belt. The same is basically true here. The only real difference is that you have a little more control over the placement, including being able to rotate the blocks with the X button. Some of the levels in this mode complicate things by having wind, which will drag your blocks with it. There is also a two-player mode, where one person controls the dropping blocks with the D-pad, the other with the face buttons. Pile Up! Bakery had this, but in BABEL: The King of the Blocks, the action all takes place on one playing field. So, you can deliberately wreck the other guy’s block placement. I didn’t like this gameplay much in Pile Up! Bakery, and I still don’t like it that much here, but it’s far more full-featured. Each of the three single-player modes has 18 different levels. You start with just the first in each mode unlocked, and beating it unlocks the next one. While it gives you a sense of progression, it also can be frustrating if you can’t beat a level. There is no scoring in most of the modes, and no high score tables. This omission hurts because it removes some incentive to go back and replay earlier levels to get a higher score, or beat them in a quicker time. StormBASIC’s games have evolved visually over the years, starting off rather rough-looking, but this (and Run Ghost Run) are very clean and polished-looking. Every level has a different background graphic. It also features some catchy music. When the game was first announced with only a screenshot of the menu screen, I jokingly suggested it might be a dancing game, based on some very small figures in the background. While it’s not, the stone-dropping guy, Babel, dances like an Egyptian when you finish a level successfully. Sometimes he combines this with the Moonwalk, which is really funny. The whole game really does exude charm, which I think has always been StormBASIC’s trademark (Tehra excepted). I had a lot of fun with this game. I would have liked more levels, though. For the price, it gives you enough, but at the same time, I found it to be so much fun, I just wanted more. Time flies when playing it. I think StormBASIC could make a franchise out of this game. The addition of high scores would have given it more replay value, and like in a lot of puzzle games, I would have liked the ability to skip a level and come back to it later, rather than having the one-level-at-a-time progression. But, the faults are minor, and while it lasted I had a blast; it’s a very enjoyable and addictive game.

Available as part of the NeoGeo Station on PlayStation Network, this is a downloadable version of the classic NeoGeo game. Yuri Sakazaki has been abducted by Mr. Big to punish her father, Takuma, and her brother, Ryo. To rescue her, Ryo and Robert must take on numerous enemies around South Town, eventually reaching the mysterious Mr. Karate. The passion of the game’s creators is evident in the unique game-play elements introduced. These include an energy gauge that is depleted every time a fighter uses a special maneuver, Desperation Attacks that are usable only when a fighter’s health is low and camera zooming that adjusts on the fly as fighters move around the stage. All these features ensure that players use strategy and tactics, rather than simply mash buttons. Adding to the mix are little touches such as characters showing cuts when they are injured and voice-over samples during cut scenes. Can you perfect the art of fighting and save Yuri?

Doodle Pool was an underwhelming take on cue sports. Though its graphics were astounding, the game somewhat underachieved in every other category. Now, Icon Games, as we all know, creates Minis that are inexhaustible by nature. Arcade Air Hockey & Bowling, Bashi Blocks (formerly Soccer Bashi), Family Games and even the weak Arcade Darts all have extended lifespans. Arcade Air Hockey & Bowling and Arcade Darts are the most comparable to Arcade Pool & Snooker. They have the same user interface, the same format and the same profile system. Arcade Air Hockey & Bowling, ironically, has no Arcade Mode. Arcade Pool & Snooker, though, includes one. Arcade Darts misfired a lot in the gameplay department, especially in its suspicious controls. Meanwhile, Arcade Pool & Snooker has smooth controls. It is highly recommended to practice first before going into battle with the A.I. It takes time to familiarize oneself with the controls. You can press and hold X to take the shot, but before that, you can adjust the spin with O. You set the power with the up and down keys before releasing your grip on the X button to hit the cue ball. The shoulder buttons are for zooming the view of the table in and out. The analog nub could also help with the angles, directions and power of your shot. In general situations, the directional buttons are better in that department, though. Arcade Pool & Snooker offers several variants of cue games. In the snooker family, it has 6-ball, 10-ball, 15-ball, as well as the eponymous snooker. In the pool family, 9-ball, 8-ball (US and UK versions), 6-ball, 10-ball and 15-ball are included. There is also the generic billiards. I opt not to explain the rules of each variant because, obviously, this post would not be enough. One blemish in Arcade Air Hockey & Bowling was its uneven A.I. The distance between the skills of the lowest A.I. and the mid-level A.I. was enormous. In Arcade Pool & Snooker, the A.I.s are unforgiving. As soon as you enter the World Tour, you are matched with players that show no mercy. A.I.s do struggle sometimes but they won’t bail you out in easy go-ahead shots. The Arcade Mode offers a tamer world, since you are matched with low level A.I.s, and its difficulty increases as you jump into subsequent levels. There is also an Exhibition Mode which offers two options: Single Game and Tournament. In Tournament, you can choose the location of the game, the number of players participating (4 minimum participants, 32 maximum!!!), whether it is a knockout format or a league-type, what game variant, match length and the level of A.I. The World Tour is the most enjoyable part of the game. You earn trophies, climb the rankings and win things. You can further customize your equipment with the prizes you win along the way. There’s multiplayer, but I certainly recommend playing the real thing instead. I can’t find any joy in playing multiplayer games on the PSP in which you take turns with a single PSP. The graphics boast 3D models, but they’re not awe-inspiring. I can say “above average.” Same goes for the soundtrack. You can turn off Player Models and Crowd Models since they don’t offer anything except cosmetics. You can also turn off Aiming Aids and Prompts if you want to challenge yourself more. This game is not fast-paced, and there are also loading times, but they are not really long enough to be a turn-off. These loading times are apparent throughout Icon Games’ Arcade series of Minis, not because of the games’ lack of optimization but more due to the abundance of content (I guess). Indeed, Arcade Pool & Snooker, like Arcade Air Hockey & Bowling, is a Mini that offers you a lot of bang for the buck.

G1M2 brought us a handful of old arcade classics from Data East as their first batch of Minis. Now they are back with something original, not emulated, but even older: Ancient Game Treasures: Mill. Mill is a board game that dates back to the Egyptians (or at least Romans), but I had never heard of it until about a month or so ago when it was included in another Mini, Family Games from Icon Games. There it was called by its English name: Nine Men’s Morris (or just Morris). It’s really not like any modern game I can think of. There is a slight resemblance to Tic-Tac-Toe, but only if you squint a lot. The board is square, with two progressively smaller squares in the center. At each corner of a square and at each midpoint of a side is a spot for a playing piece, 24 spots in all. Each player has 9 pieces, presumably the “men” in the English name, though really just colored rocks or pebbles (or, perhaps, if playing at lunch time, muffins). Players take turns playing one of their rocks on an empty spot. Once the pieces are all placed, the players then take turns sliding their rocks around the board. By slide, I mean they can only move one of their pieces to an adjacent empty space. While this certainly provides a solid game of Mill, ultimately it is hurt by simply being just Mill, and not the definitive version of it. For only a dollar more, you can get Family Games, which contains Mill and several other games. At the same time, this doesn’t really provide anything (other than explaining how to play) outside of what the version in Family Games provides, either. For instance, being able to select different pieces (perhaps the piece sets being unlockable), having AI opponents with personalities (or at least faces or names), different boards, different backgrounds, etc. Or if they were really ambitious, having a storyline and campaign—if it can be done for Mahjong Solitaire, and it has, it can be done for just about everything. If you are going to base a Mini around a very simple game, give it a lot of frills and options. Still, if you only want to play Mill (or Morris or whatever you want to call it), this is probably the best choice by a narrow margin. While the version in Family Games offers essentially the same experience (along with a lot more games), the user interface here is slightly better. The AI also seems stronger.
